First Nations

"There are some 444 municipalities in the Province of Ontario. 

There are some 133 First Nations with 16 Tribal Councils in Ontario. 

Not every has their own dedicated Fire Department but many have and some share resources with various MoUs, mutual and automatic aid arrangements or non-geographic support as well as back up to fire and other hazards on ad hoc arrangements. Some straddle several treaties and borders. 

All have different levels of community Fire Protection and Emergency Services offered for their indigenous communities.  

This website was created to list and connect Fire Departments which respond to First Nations Communities.  

In time we will update with contact details, websites, some sharing of information which will help to protect FN communities. There is also a training and certification service to help build capacity as well as required knowledge and skills." 

The Indigenous Fire Service Directory (IFSD) provides listing of Tribal, First Nations, Metis and Inuit Fire Rescue departments with recognition for those who are not only listed but also "Registered" or "Accredited" by meeting certain requirements and standards. The IFSD also monitors certain training and certification opportunities, especially those which are freely available, useful, or discounted and organizations which provide such training to a high standards and meeting certain requirements, when they do. We recognize and award the Fire Departments, Chiefs and FD members for their excellence in pursuit of community safety and service.
